How does it really work?

How is Pi approaching a stereo file in correspondence with other stereo and mono files? Is it making sure A’s Left is in-phase with B’s Left? Or is it making sure A’'s Left is in phase with B’s Right AND Left? What’s going on here?

Say I have a stereo bus with one mono Gtr-L panned hard-left into the bus and one mono Gtr-R panned hard-right into the bus. And say I have PI as the only insert in that bus that is trying to phase-sync to stereo Bass bus (no inserts except for Pi) that has a mono bass track inputting into it. How does Pi approach phase-synchronization with regards to Left, Right, and Center of the Bass bus and itself? (Basically, how does my initial question come into play here?)

There are so many details of the functions of Pi that are left unclear, but this is a big detail I (and others) would like to know!

Hi @audiobuurma,

Thanks for your message.

Is it making sure A’s Left is in-phase with B’s Left? Or is it making sure A’'s Left is in phase with B’s Right AND Left? What’s going on here?

When inserted on two Stereo tracks, Pi will optimize the phase relationship between A’s Left and B’s Left and between A’s Right and B’s Right.
The Left and Right channels of each track are phase-locked, any adjustments made to the Left channel will also be applied to the Right channel, and vice versa.

In this setup, Pi will optimize the phase relationship between the left guitar and the bass bus, as well as between the right guitar and the bass bus. As mentioned, both channels in each Pi instance are phase-locked, so optimizations made to one side will be applied to the other side as well.

I added this information to Pi’s FAQs section.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Oran

Thank you! I’m glad that it works as expected. Phase-locking between Left and Right is crucial, but I hadn’t read anything explicitly stating it works like that. I’m sure plenty of people will appreciate that new FAQ response
